The conflict in the Western Sahara has risen in prominence after the administration of Donald Trump, in its waning months, engaged in a cynical maneuver to bribe Morocco into normalized relations with Israel in exchange for the USA recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the Western Sahara, illegally occupied since 1975. This interview, with noted specialists Katlyn Thomas and Stephen Zunes, examines both the background and the current situation, helping us to understand the relevance of this conflict and why it must not be ignored.
Katlyn Thomas is an attorney and former official for MINURSO (the UN mission in the Western Sahara) in charge of Legal Affairs. She supervised the interview process that led to the 1999 Western Sahara voting list. She is the author of The Emperor’s Clothes: The Naked Truth about Western Sahara.
Stephen Zunes is a professor of politics and international studies at the University of San Francisco. He is the coauthor (with Jacob Mundy) of Western Sahara: War, Nationalism and Conflict Irresolution.
