Learning from the pandemic in the light of Brexit| Gurminder K Bhambra– from BLM in Europe, a conference at Rutgers-New Brunswick

We will be posting a series of talks from Black Lives Matter in Europe, a conference organized by Belinda Davis  and the Center for European Studies at Rutgers University-New Brunswick.

Since at least a decade ago, when prominent political leaders across Europe declared the ‘death of multiculturalism’, there has been a growing mobilization of authoritarian and far-right political activity and scholarship across Europe. Covid-19 prompted a pause in such rhetoric. While this pause might have been temporary, it nonetheless provides us with the opportunity to reflect on who we are, how we came to be, and what we owe to others.

Gurminder K Bhambra is Professor of Postcolonial and Decolonial Studies in the School of Global Studies, University of Sussex and is a Fellow of the British Academy. She is author of Connected Sociologies (Bloomsbury, 2014) and the award-winning Rethinking Modernity: Postcolonialism and the Sociological Imagination(Palgrave, 2007). She is co-editor of Decolonising the University(Pluto Press, 2018). She set up the Global Social Theory website (globalsocialtheory.org), is co-editor of the social research magazine, Discover Society (discoversociety.org), and also directs the Connected Sociologies Curriculum Project (connectedsociologies.org).
